Why have one favorite when you can have ten (or more)?

I was recently asked what my favorite movie is, and it got me thinking (again) about this idea of ‘A’ favorite movie. I don’t prescribe to the idea of one favorite movie. You can quibble of the strict definition of the word as a singular choice, but I do adhere to the notion of multiple favorites, especially with movies.

I find so much joy in watching movies that it isn’t a competition to earn a perch on the top of the metaphorical shelf of my heart. But that shelf is filled with nearly two dozen films. I counted. I won’t single out one film, so I wrote a list (see below).

The funny thing about my favorites list is that there are several that I haven’t seen in several years or longer. While others, I watch on an annual basis. I wouldn’t say that the ones I watch yearly mean more to me, they just fit into a habit, a mood, a time constraint.

What this means, to me at least, is that these less frequently watched movies are on there because of the feeling I had about them at the time, years ago. But thinking about it more, they could serve for a rewatch to see if I feel differently after a long hiatus of viewing. My guess is, being on there for a reason— that I can recite for each— they’ll hold up.

So make a note on your phone and start a list of your favorite movies. You’ll be surprised at what you enjoy, the eclectic nature of your choices, and the common thread between all of them.

While I may refuse to choose one movie I adore above all else, there is one perspective I think everyone shares, that is our favorites get our undivided attention when we watch them.

And now you too will have that list of movies that should be your priority rewatch from time to time. Because as time marches on, your list will only grow larger, so good thing to keep track of them all.
